One of the greatest pleasures of ancient China was the flying of kites or, paper birds, as they are known. Fearsome-looking many-headed dragon kites were also used to provoke fear among the enemy during times of war, while Marco Polo in his chronicle observed that the soaring objects were used to predict the success of a voyage.
